At Audley Community Park in Blackburn, Matter at Hand invites visitors to explore place, community, and low-carbon construction as part of a major new partnership between the National Festival of Making and Super Slow Way.
Over the last two years, designer Lewis Jones of Matter at hand has been working with Darwen Terracotta through the Art in Manufacturing programme to explore how industrial manufacturing expertise and earth-based construction methods can inform new approaches to sustainable building. What began as a programme of research, prototyping and material testing has now expanded into a longer-term ambition: the exploration of what could become the UK’s first full-scale Poured Earth building.
