North End Sketch Club on tour with Super Slow Way

FREE sketching sessions. All materials provided. Everyone welcome!

Whether you’re Picasso or picking up a pen for the first time, you’re welcome to join SSW artist in residence Jayne Lawless at the Station Hotel Sketch Club!

Built in 1893, the Grade II listed Station Hotel is Nelson’s last pub. Pubs like the Station Hotel are an important part of local heritage: places where people meet, share stories and build connections across generations. Jayne says, “I first got to know the Station Hotel over a cup of tea while trying to find the Liverpool match on the telly. I chatted with Gemma, the pub’s manager, about its history and the events she organises to bring people through the doors. Sitting close to the bus and train station, it’s a place people have been arriving at for generations, and it feels like a brilliant place to start getting to know Nelson.”

Born in Anfield, Liverpool, in 2018, North End Sketch Club has travelled as far as Texas, USA, and now it’s coming to Nelson. Artist Jayne Lawless is bringing the idea to the Station Hotel as part of her residency with Super Slow Way, inviting local people to join in and become part of the next chapter of the club.

Sketch club is about getting together, having a go and taking a closer look at the places around us. You might be curious about trying sketching for the first time, or you might already know the quiet, meditative pleasure of spending time looking and making marks. The aim isn’t to create a detailed or accurate representation, but to notice what catches your eye and capture something of the moment. There are no rights or wrongs, no pressure and no expensive kit needed. Just come along, pick up a pen, have a go and see what happens.

The Station Hotel is our starting point, but we’ll be on the move. As the residency develops, we’ll find new places to meet, sketch and explore around Nelson and beyond. The sketch club is also a way for Jayne to get to know the people who live here, hear your stories and discover the places that matter to you. You never know what we might end up sketching next!
