Artist Opportunity – Art in Manufacturing Residencies

Super Slow Way is delighted to announce eight new commissions as part of the Festival of Making in 2017. Art in Manufacturing will partner artists with manufacturers in Blackburn for 6 month-residencies.

The Art in Manufacturing and The Festival of Making is supported with funding from Arts Council England, Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, Heritage Lottery Fund and Super Slow Way

The Opportunity

Eight commissions are available to artists who will each take up a residency with manufacturers in Blackburn and Lancashire, including food, textile, paper and plastic manufacturers.

The National Festival of Making

The Festival of Making will take place in Blackburn in May 2017. An opportunity to see, make and do for residents and visitors as the festival takes over the streets with an eclectic mix of making experiences for everyone.

The Art in Manufacturing

The ‘headline’ element of the festival programme, this project will illuminate manufacturing in Lancashire forming an Art Trail with associated making experiences in Blackburn Town Centre.

1. Darwen Terracotta – £10,000

2. Panaz – £6,000

3. Roach Bridge Tissues – £6,000

4. Cherry Tree Bakery – £4,000

5. Silent Night – £4,000

6. Cardboard Box Company – £4,000

7. Graham & Brown – £4000

8. MGS Plastics – £4000

The commission total is inclusive of artists fees, travel and accommodation, costs associated with installation / decommission, but does not include materials which are provided by the manufacturer.

We welcome interest from artists working in any art form, in particular those whose practice may reflect the following:

  • Interest in heritage
  • Work in a participatory context
  • Interest in Blackburn’s history as an industrial centre
  • Interest in engaging with unique, often industrial processes, products, making methods
