Open Call from Generation Change

22nd July 2019

We are Generation Change - a group of 18-22 year olds in Burnley who want to use our voice to make a change in our local area, through a new creative commission

We have been meeting for a few weeks thinking about that and what it means to be activists & change-makers.

We’ve been talking about themes that interest & affect us like…

  • Climate change – Saving the Bees
  • Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing
  • Lack of opportunities and future prospects in Burnley
  • Changing perceptions of the town

But we’re not sure where to start, so we are looking for an artist to work collaboratively with us to help us find the change we can make, be that big and having impact on our whole community, small and within us personally or somewhere in between.

You can see what we’ve been up to so far on our instagram: @generationchangeburnley

We are working with Blaze and Super Slow Way on this project and they’ve given us the £5000 budget to work with – we want to make sure we spend it well, so if you’re interested in helping us do that, we’re interested in hearing from you!  We don’t mind what kind of an artist you are, we don’t have an idea of an ideal final outcome – we just want to work with an artist that will work with us to create work that says something important.

Timeline of Project:

Start – August, end outcome sometime in October ideally.

We meet every week on a Thursday – 5-7pm but timing can be flexible, sometimes we can do longer sessions and sometimes meet on other days.

The chosen artist doesn’t need to be local but we would need you to meet with us regularly so we can be a real part of what is developed and delivered.

Budget:

£5,000 inclusive of materials, artist time and travel.

There’s no need to map out a detailed budget yet – just tell us your artist day rate at this stage.

How to apply:

Please submit a maximum of 5 examples of relevant work/ projects – with a bit of a description. Please add links to your website or videos etc if you think that’s helpful.

Please answer the following three questions:

  • Why do you want to work with us?
  • What inspires you?
  • How would you approach working collaboratively with us on this project?

Please submit all of the above in one collated PDF document and send to hannah@blazeonline.org.uk with the subject: Generation Change Commission

Deadline to apply is Thursday 1st August at 12pm. Shortlisted candidates will be informed by Friday 2ndAugust.

Interview date is Thursday 8th August – Shortlisted artists will be invited to deliver an initial session with us, so we can get a feel for how we would gel working with you –If invited to this stage we will pay for your time to do this.

Generation Change is a collaboration between Super Slow Way and Blaze, an arts organisation led by young people to develop the next generation of Cultural Producers.
