OPEN CALL: SSW 10 Year Anniversary Commission

29th November 2024

We're looking to commission an artist to produce a run of artworks for our 10 year anniversary

Background:

The Super Slow Way is an arts programme based in East Lancashire shaped by the local community working alongside artists. Founded in 2015 as one of Arts Council England’s Creative People & Places projects we support people who have little or no experience of the traditionally subsidised arts sector to weave the fabric of a future cultural landscape in Pennine Lancashire along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Corridor using its rich assets of environment, heritage, and community.

The Brief:

January 2025 sees Super Slow Way’s 10th anniversary and to mark this occasion we will be holding an event for our communities, artists, stakeholders and staff at Finsley Gate Wharf in Burnley which is the site of one of our earliest commissions, Stephen Turner’s Exbury Egg.

For this event, and to commemorate the anniversary, we would like to commission an artist to create a piece of work that can be produced in multiples to mark the occasion; an image on paper that celebrates our work over the last ten years. Something special that people want to keep and treasure –

• To celebrate the communities and artists we have worked with over the last ten years and reference the landscape and heritage of this 20 mile stretch of the Leeds & Liverpool canal from Blackburn to Pendle.
• To be produced in multiples of up to 250 within the production budget.

Budget:

• The overall budget for development of the work is £1,000
• Budget for production is £1,000

Delivery timescale:

Application deadline: 5pm, Friday 13th December
Selected artist notified by: Thursday 19th December
Final Artwork files delivered by: Friday 10th January
10th Anniversary event: Thursday 30th January

To apply, please send us:

• A short outline of why this project interests you and a brief overview of how you would approach it (no more than one side of A4).
• Some examples of your previous work that you feel demonstrate why your practice is relevant for this opportunity.
