Community Iftar in Nelson

18th March 2026

Earlier this month we welcomed over sixty people to our community Iftar at Unity Wellbeing Centre. The Iftar was a collaboration with Youth Works in the Kitchen & Mums to Mums as part of Dana Olarescu’s Taste of Transformation artist residency – which sees the FOOD Nelson manifesto activated across the town. Youth Works, a group of young people from Marsden Heights have been hosting community meals for a number of months now with great success and these will continue on the third Thursday of each month.

The Iftar began with everyone cooking together in the kitchen with ingredients all bought locally, chicken shawarma, homemade hummus, tzatziki and zhoug, freshly baked Turkish bread from Sahaba, vibrant salads, fresh fruit, dates and a beautiful cake to make the occasion graced the table. The Iftar was opened with a Dua (opening prayer) led by one of the young people, the lively room fell silent for a moment of reflection. It was then time to break fast, with everyone eating together, followed by conversation, laughter and ending in communal song.
