OPEN CALL: Exbury Egg Bingo

12th June 2025

Open call for Stephen Turner's Exbury Egg at Finsley Gate Wharf Burnley

The Exbury Egg is a laboratory for studying the environment by artist Stephen Turner which invites us to reconsider our relationship to nature and its cycles. It first came to Finsley Gate Wharf in the spring of 2016 for 6 months when the site was derelict and disused before going on tour around the country. Nearly ten years later and the Egg is back with Finsley Gate being its permanent home.

The Wharf now has a new lease of life but is still a precious green space which The Egg and Stephen, once again, asks us to explore, value and celebrate.  During his first residency, many friendships in the local community were made and Stephen volunteered at the local community centre, helping with the weekly luncheon club where bingo sessions led by volunteers were very popular. Stephen had discussions with the group about the possibility of exploring this as a re-imagined activity at the Exbury Egg. However, against a packed programme of bug themed discos, fishing, moth watching, star gazing, nature walks, fruit picking, photography, poetry projects and equinox celebrations this never came to fruition but is something we would like to make happen in 2025.

We are now looking for someone to work with the local community of Burnley Wood and visitors to the Exbury Egg to produce an alternative bingo game inspired by the themes of nature, sustainability and local community. This could include the invention of a new “bingo lingo” and accompanying illustrations but is not limited to this and we welcome alternative ideas.

The project will need to include 4 family friendly hands-on participatory sessions held on site over the summer holidays, where the local community can contribute to the production of the finished product which will culminate in an outdoor bingo event at the incredibly popular Burnley Canal Festival at the end of August.

The fee for this project is £1,500 inclusive of travel and expenses
