We are seeking artists of any discipline to work with local residents over the course of a year to help nurture connections between them and the natural world found along the canal corridor. We are looking for three separate practices to work in three places along the stretch – in Pendle, Burnley and Hyndburn.
Super Slow Way has been working with communities in these places over the past ten years and has formed strong relationships with people who are passionate about where they live and eager to understand and develop the natural assets along the canal on their doorsteps. Many of these disused green spaces are sites of former cotton mills that were demolished at the end of the last century and carry that history.
The overall budget for each commission is in the region of £10,000 which must cover fees, expenses and materials.
Delivery timescale:
- Application deadline: 5pm, Friday 26th June 2026
- Interviews: Week of 13th July – exact dates TBC
- Projects to take place between: September 2026 – Sept 2027
Unfortunately as there has been such a high volume of enquiries about these residencies we aren’t able to speak to people individually but please email any questions to zara@superslowway.org.uk
Budget
The budget includes all accommodation and travel, however we would expect that no more than 10% of the budget should be spent on this. If you’re applying as an international artist or a UK-based artist living far from the area please consider that ongoing community engagement is central to these residencies. Therefore, the successful artist/s will be expected to be available to spend a significant amount of time here. If you wish to bring your family, you would need to arrange your own accommodation and childcare.
Non-UK residents
Non UK residents are welcome to apply but applicants must satisfy all visa requirements.
Workshops
We would hope that the appointed artist can develop a sustained creative relationship with our communities so this opportunity is not intended for a programme of workshops.
Word count
There is no specified word count, but we ask for just a short description of why the opportunity interests you and some brief examples of previous projects that demonstrate your experience and practice.
